How it works
atmega328p-nano
When your agent uses it
Firmware development for the Arduino Nano (A000005, ATmega328P @ 16 MHz, 5 V) — its 30 KB usable flash, 2 KB SRAM, 1 KB EEPROM, 8-channel 10-bit ADC, six 8-bit PWM pins across three timers, UART shared with the USB-serial chip, I2C on A4/A5, SPI on D10–D13, sleep modes, and the Arduino AVR core + PlatformIO setup around them. Use when working on this board or any ATmega328P Nano clone (FTDI or CH340 USB): project setup, platformio.ini, old-vs-new bootloader uploads, pin mapping, A6/A7 restrictions, timer/Servo/tone conflicts, the 2 KB SRAM budget, analog references, powering from VIN, ICSP recovery, or debugging why something on the board does not work.

# Arduino Nano (ATmega328P)
Board-specific firmware knowledge. The Nano is simple enough that every
failure mode is silent — the sketch compiles, uploads, runs, and does
something subtly wrong — so read the reference file rather than guessing.

Firmware development for the Beetle — the CJMCU / DFRobot "Mini Arduino Leonardo" USB board (ATmega32U4 @ 16 MHz, 5 V, 21×28 mm, castellated pads) — its native USB (CDC serial + HID keyboard/mouse/joystick), Caterina bootloader and 1200 bps touch upload, ten exposed I/O pads, four PWM pins across Timer0/Timer1, five ADC channels, I2C on D2/D3, SPI on the back-side ICSP pads, 28 KB usable flash and 2.5 KB SRAM, and the PlatformIO + Arduino AVR core (`board = leonardo`) setup around them. Use when working on this board or any ATmega32U4 Leonardo/Micro/Pro-Micro-class clone: project setup, platformio.ini, why the board shows up as two different serial ports, uploads that fail or hang, recovering a bricked or HID-spamming board by shorting the ICSP reset pads, pin mapping and which pads are missing, PWM/timer conflicts, Servo and tone, USB HID keyboard projects, the SRAM budget, powering from the + pad, or debugging why something on the board does not work.

# Beetle — Mini Arduino Leonardo (ATmega32U4)
Board-specific firmware knowledge. The Beetle is an ATmega32U4 with **native
USB** and **ten pads**, and almost every trap on it comes from one of those
two facts: USB means the programming interface is the sketch you are about
to replace, and ten pads means most of the Leonardo pin numbering the
compiler accepts goes nowhere on this board.

# LGT8F328P-LQFP32 MiniEVB ("LGTBF32BP")
A board that looks exactly like an Arduino Nano, takes the same sketches, and is not one. The
LGT8F328P is a Logic Green LGT8XM core that executes the AVR instruction set inside a chip
with a different clock system, a 12-bit ADC, a DAC, four timers, no real EEPROM and no
crystal. `board.build.mcu` is literally `atmega328p`, so **everything compiles and most things
silently behave differently**. Almost every failure on this board is a Nano assumption that
was not true.
Read the reference files rather than reasoning from ATmega328P knowledge.

# ESP32-WROOM-32 devkit — 30-pin
The commodity ESP32 board: `ESP-WROOM-32` module, USB-serial bridge, LDO, two buttons,
15 pins a side. It is the one that fits a breadboard with a row free, which is why it
outsells the 36- and 38-pin versions.
Nearly every failure on this board comes from a pin that has a second job. Read
`reference/board-hardware.md` before choosing pins rather than guessing from a tutorial —
a lot of ESP32 tutorials were written for a different board size.

# ESP32-WROOM-32 devkit — 36-pin
The original DOIT ESP32 DevKit V1, before the flash pins were dropped to make the shorter
30-pin board everyone sells now. Eighteen pins a side: the 30-pin layout plus six pins at
the USB end that go straight to the module's internal flash die.
Those six are the only functional difference from the 30-pin board, and they are a
liability rather than a feature. Everything else — the usable GPIO set, the strapping
pins, the analog budget — is identical.

# ESP32-WROOM-32 devkit — 38-pin
The reference form factor: Espressif's **ESP32-DevKitC V4** and the clones that copy its
J2/J3 header pin for pin. Nineteen pins a side, and every pad of the module is broken out —
including six that will hang the chip and one that will stop it booting.

omission; this one hands you the flash bus and GPIO0 and expects you to know better.

# ESP32-C3 0.42" OLED (ESP32-C3FH4)
A 25 × 20 mm ESP32-C3 board with a 0.42-inch OLED glued to it. Two things make
it worth a skill: **the panel is a 72 × 40 window inside a 128 × 64 controller
and does not start at column 0**, and **the C3 has exactly one I2C controller,
which the panel occupies**. Almost every failure on this board traces back to
one of those two facts, and neither is visible from the code.
There is no vendor datasheet for the board. The detail below is assembled from
the schematic, the Zephyr port, published bring-ups and a working project —
read the reference files rather than guessing.

# Guition JC-ESP32P4-M3-DEV
An ESP32-P4 carrier with a MIPI display connector, a MIPI camera connector, Ethernet,
audio, a card slot, RS485, a battery charger and **three USB-C sockets** — and a radio
that is a second chip you talk to over SDIO.
Three things shape almost every task on this board. First, **the P4 has no radio**:
`esp_wifi` is not the API, `esp_wifi_remote` over `esp_hosted` is, and the ESP32-C6 inside
the module needs its own firmware. Second, **the silicon comes in two mutually incompatible
revisions** and ESP-IDF defaults to the wrong one for the boards being sold — the symptom
is a bootloader that dies with `Illegal instruction`, which reads like corrupt flash.
Third, **there is no user LED**: the only thing that lights is the power indicator, so a
board that "does nothing" is usually a board that is running fine with its console on the
wrong socket.View the complete source on GitHubesp32p4-jc4880p443

# Guition JC4880P443C_I_W (ESP32-P4, 4.3" 480×800)
A 4.3" portrait IPS panel with capacitive touch, bolted to the same **JC-ESP32P4-M3** module
Guition uses on its P4 dev boards: an ESP32-P4 with no radio, plus an ESP32-C6 that does the
Wi-Fi over SDIO.
Three things shape almost every task on this board. First, **the panel only works with
Guition's ST7701 init sequence, and Guition hid it** inside a patched copy of the driver:
take their calling code with the registry driver and you get a black screen with every
call returning `ESP_OK`. Second, **the silicon comes in two incompatible revisions** and
ESP-IDF defaults to the one this board does not have — the symptom is a bootloader that
dies with `Illegal instruction`. Third, **Wi-Fi is a second chip with its own firmware and
its own NVS**, and under PlatformIO its host driver does not even start by itself.

# ESP32-S3-WROOM CAM — 40-pin
Twenty pins a side, a DVP camera connector on the front, a microSD slot on the back, and
two USB-C sockets. The camera claims **fourteen** of the thirty-six GPIO pads, the card
claims three more, and the octal PSRAM claims three that are printed on the header and
look free. What is left is seven pins.
That arithmetic is the whole story of this board. It also means the Arduino defaults for
`Wire` and `SPI` land squarely on camera data lines, and that the single most common
failure — "the camera does not initialise" — is almost never the camera.
- `reference/board-hardware.md` — the board: the full 40-pin header table with every
alternate function, the camera and SDMMC maps traced to the vendor's own code, the

A 4.2" reflective panel with **no backlight**, an audio front end, four I2C slaves and an
18650, on an N16R8 module — and **four free GPIOs on the header** when you are done.
Two things shape almost every task here. First, the panel is 1 bpp and reflective: a full
frame is 15,000 bytes, it holds its image with the SoC asleep, and it is invisible in the
dark. Second, the board has **no UART bridge chip and no user LED** — the single Type-C
socket is the S3's native USB, so if the console flags are wrong there is no fallback
route and no LED to blink. A board that "does nothing" is usually a board that is running
fine and cannot tell you.

The board that made the ESP8266 usable: an Ai-Thinker ESP-12E/F module, a USB-UART

is in neither PlatformIO's board list nor the Arduino core's variant list, so
half of what a tutorial tells you to type does not apply; a missing 32.768 kHz

exist until you include a library that the code never otherwise mentions.

Firmware development for the Raspberry Pi Pico (original, RP2040 — dual Cortex-M0+ @ 133 MHz, 264 KB SRAM, 2 MB QSPI flash) — its 26 exposed GPIO, 4-channel 12-bit ADC, 16-channel PWM, 2× UART/I2C/SPI, PIO state machines, USB 1.1 CDC, VSYS/VBUS/SMPS power wiring, and the PlatformIO + arduino-pico (earlephilhower) setup around them. Use when working on this board, any Pico H or Pico clone, or a bare RP2040: project setup, platformio.ini, the earlephilhower-vs-Mbed core choice, pin mapping, USB CDC serial, analogRead/analogWrite behaviour, Wire/SPI defaults, battery power, EEPROM emulation, BOOTSEL/UF2 flashing, or debugging why something on the board does not work.

# Raspberry Pi Pico (RP2040)
Board-specific firmware knowledge. The Pico's failure modes are quiet: a
wrong `platformio.ini` line silently links a different Arduino core, `Serial`
goes to a port that does not exist yet, and an ADC pin doubles as a power
rail — so read the reference files rather than guessing.
- `reference/board-hardware.md` — the complete board reference: 40-pin map
with alt functions, the four hidden GPIOs, power tree, clocks, memory map,
relevant errata **plus** a development guide (Part II: §7 toolchain and
the core-choice table, §8 peripheral cookbook, §9 flashing, §10
symptom → cause → fix table).

Firmware development for the WeAct Studio RP2350A Core Board (RP2350A — dual Cortex-M33 @ 150 MHz, 520 KB SRAM, 4 MB or 16 MB QSPI flash) in both of its revisions, RP2350A_V10 and RP2350A_V20 — the 40-pin Pico-2-shaped header, 3-or-4-channel 12-bit ADC, PWM, PIO, USB-C CDC, the V1.0 LDO vs V2.0 buck-boost power wiring, and the PlatformIO + arduino-pico (earlephilhower) setup around them. Use when working on this board, a WeAct RP2350 core board of unknown revision, or any Raspberry Pi Pico 2 / RP2350A clone: project setup, platformio.ini, board = rpipico2 vs weact_rp2350b, telling V1.0 and V2.0 apart, pin mapping, LED and KEY pins, powering it from a battery, 4 MB vs 16 MB flash, erratum RP2350-E9 pull-down trouble, BOOT/RESET UF2 flashing, or debugging why something on the board does not work.

# WeAct Studio RP2350A Core Board (RP2350A)
A Pico-2-shaped RP2350A core board that ships in **two incompatible
revisions under one name**. V2.0 is a pin-for-pin Pico 2 replacement; V1.0
brings out every GPIO instead, and pays for it by moving the power pin, the
ADC reference and three GPIO functions. Firmware built for the wrong one
compiles cleanly and then drives the wrong pins — so establish the revision
before writing any code, and read the reference files rather than assuming
Pico 2 behaviour.
- `reference/board-hardware.md` — the complete board reference: how to tell
the revisions apart, the 40-pin map for both, the off-header GPIO, power
trees, clocks, memory map, vendor-material inventory **plus** a development

Firmware development for the 40-pin "Black Pill"-format board with an STM32F401RCT6 (STM32F401RC, LQFP64, 256 KB flash, 64 KB RAM, 84 MHz) that ships with the WeAct Studio HID Bootloader (USB 0483:572A, flash 0x08000000-0x08003FFF, app at 0x08004000) — its PC13 LED, KEY button on PA0, 25 MHz HSE, USB-C on USB_OTG_FS, and the PlatformIO + STM32Cube HAL setup around them, including a USB CDC virtual COM port for printf debugging. Use when working on this board, an unbranded F401RCT6 Black Pill clone, or any STM32F401/F411 board that enumerates as "WeAct Studio HID Bootloader": project setup, platformio.ini, linking at 0x08004000, flashing through the HID bootloader or ROM DFU, the app starting behind a bootloader (VTOR, SysTick, clock hand-off), clock/PLL configuration for 84 MHz plus 48 MHz USB, printf/serial console over USB (no /dev/cu or COM port), a blink that never starts or hangs in HAL_Delay, entering or recovering the bootloader, or debugging why something on the board does not work.

# STM32F401RCT6 "Black Pill" with the WeAct HID bootloader
Board-specific firmware knowledge. The board's defining feature is not the chip but what sits in the
first 16 KB of its flash: WeAct's HID bootloader. Almost every failure on this board comes from code
that assumes it owns 0x08000000 and a freshly reset chip — neither is true here. Read the reference
files rather than guessing.
- `reference/board-hardware.md` — the hardware (MCU, pins, header, clocks, memory map with the
bootloader), a full description of the bootloader's behaviour and protocol, PlatformIO
configuration, flashing and recovery routes, and a symptom → cause → fix table (§9).
- `reference/recipes.md` — copy-paste code taken from `template/`: `platformio.ini`, the linker-script
change, the hand-off `Reset_Handler`, the 84/48 MHz clock tree, the USB CDC console, the flasher,
bootloader reinstall.
