# AI Config Authoring
## Core Principle: Context Is a Budget
Every always-loaded line competes with the user's actual task for model
attention, and attention degrades as volume grows — bloated config makes
agents ignore the instructions that matter. Pay the always-on price only
for content needed every session; defer everything else behind on-demand
loading (progressive disclosure). For each line, apply the deletion test:
would removing it cause mistakes? If not, cut it.

# Grim Artifact Authoring
Grim publishes six artifact kinds to OCI registries. Each has its own
source shape, frontmatter schema, and validation gates. This root file
holds the invariants that apply to every kind; per-kind depth lives in
`references/`, loaded via the routing table below.
## The Six Kinds
`grim build` and `grim release` infer the kind from the path — except
agents (always `--kind agent`, or they silently pack as rules) and MCP
servers (always `--kind mcp`, or the `.toml` is treated as a bundle).

# Grim Usage
Grimoire (binary: `grim`) is a package manager for AI-agent configuration.
It distributes six artifact kinds — **skills**, **rules**, **agents**,
**MCP servers**, **hooks**, and **bundles** — through any standard OCI
registry (GHCR, Docker Hub, a private Distribution), with lockfile-pinned
installs into a growing fleet of AI clients plus a vendor-neutral `agents`
target. The current names are listed in
[references/registries.md](references/registries.md#client-targets); the
set grows every minor release, so read it there rather than assuming. An
MCP server artifact installs by registering an entry in each client's
native MCP config file (never as a file of its own); uninstall removes
only that entry, never the file.

A small playbook for cutting a release: bump the version, regenerate the
changelog, tag, and run the publish checklist.
It exists in the manual rig for one structural reason: it is the **only**

how to publish is authored here or in `catalog/publish.toml`, so one artifact
exercises the whole read path at once:
- Frontmatter `license`, `compatibility`, and the descriptive `metadata` keys
(`authors`, `vendor`, `homepage`, `documentation`) become
`org.opencontainers.image.*` / `com.grimoire.*` annotations on the manifest.
- `revision` and `created` are derived from the publishing commit — no flag
needed, and no wall clock is read, so re-publishing the same commit yields
the same digest.
- The repository's **support channels** ride the description companion, not
