character-card-builder
When your agent uses it
An interview-style character builder that turns a half-formed idea into a full, standard character card, one sharp question at a time. Use it when a writer has the seed of a character — a name, an image, a role — but not yet a coherent person, and wants to develop one before or during drafting. It questions and organises the writer's answers into a card; it never writes the author's prose or invents the character for them.

Turn a half-formed idea into a full, standard character card — through interview, one sharp question at a time, so the character stays the author's invention.
## The one rule
This skill asks, probes, and organises. It **never writes or rewrites the author's prose, and it never invents the character for the writer.** It draws the character out through questions and shapes the *writer's own* answers into a card.
The hard part of that rule is the temptation to *help too much*. The research on interviewing is blunt about the risk: a leading question doesn't merely bias an answer, it can **implant** a detail the writer later remembers as their own. So the skill holds a discipline — it asks what you can actually answer, builds each question from *your* words, and when you're stuck it never fills the blank with a trait it picked. If it offers options, they're a **contrasting menu to react against** — two poles, not one suggestion — always yours to reject, and only ever a prompt, never a decision. A blank you can't fill is *information* (the character isn't formed there yet), not a hole for the tool to plug.
## Intake — start wherever you are
Bring whatever you have — a name, an image, a role in the plot, or just a feeling. You don't need a framework or a finished idea; a blank page is a fine place to begin. Tell it the seed and, if you can, the story the character will live in, so the questions fit the book rather than a void.
It adapts to how you work: if you're a planner who wants the checklist, it'll be systematic; if you're a discovery writer who finds questionnaires deadening, it follows the thread instead of marching a list. Either way it asks **one question at a time** — never a wall of fields.

When your agent uses it
Reads a finished or drafted manuscript and reverse-engineers a standard character card for each major player — goal, wound, arc, voice, relationships — built only from what is actually on the page. Use it when a writer has a draft but no character bible, or wants to see who their characters have become versus who they intended. It reads and documents; it never writes or rewrites the author's prose.

Read the manuscript and build a standard character card for each major player, reverse-engineered from what's actually on the page — not from what the author meant to put there.
## The one rule
This skill reads, analyses, and documents. It **never writes or rewrites the author's prose.** It produces character cards *about* the fiction; it never adds a scene, a line of dialogue, or a backstory beat that isn't already on the page. If the wound is only implied, it marks it inferred rather than inventing it.
That restraint is also the point of the tool. Because it cards only what's demonstrated, it shows you the character who is *actually on the page* — which is not always the one you intended. The gap between the two is the most useful thing it hands back.
## Intake — you don't need a character bible to start
You don't need to know your cast list or have any framework in mind. Open however you like — paste the manuscript and say "card my characters," name one person you're unsure about ("is Elena landing?"), or drop a chapter range. Deciding who's major and what a card needs is the skill's job, not yours.
Its first reply orients you in two quick moves: a one-line map (it reads the text → gathers each character's appearances → builds an evidence-anchored card), then a light intake:

Put the opening in front of a simulated literary agent reading cold from the slush pile — and get the verdict, request or pass, with the real reason behind it.
## The one rule
This skill reads and judges. It **never writes or rewrites the author's prose.** It tells the writer where the agent's attention dropped and why the pass came; it does not rewrite the hook or punch up the first line. The honest read *is* the value — a fixed page would just hide the problem the writer needs to see.
## Intake — you don't need a polished query
You don't have to arrive with a logline, comps, or any query-letter polish. Open however you like — paste the first pages and ask "would an agent keep reading?", say "here's my opening, be brutal," or just drop the chapter in. Framing the market read is the skill's job, not yours.
Its first reply orients you in two quick moves: a one-line map of what's about to happen (a cold slush read → a page-by-page reaction → a verdict with the honest why), then a light intake it needs to put the pages on the *right* desk:
- **Genre and category** — thriller, literary, upmarket, romance, MG, YA, adult. This decides *whose* desk it lands on: a literary agent and a thriller agent request and pass on different things, so the read is only fair if it's calibrated to the market you're actually querying. If you're unsure, it will infer a best guess from the pages and name it, so you can correct it.
- **How much to read** — the classic agent unit is the first five pages (~1,250 words) or the first chapter. Hand it whatever you'd paste into a query form; it reads only as far as the writing earns.View the complete source on GitHubbeta-reader-panel

Give the writer the room of readers their book will eventually face — several distinct beta-reader personas reacting chapter by chapter, honestly and in character.
## The one rule
This skill reads and reacts. It **never writes or rewrites the author's prose.** The personas report their experience — confusion, boredom, delight, a lost thread — but they do not fix anything or supply replacement text. A beta reader tells you where they stumbled, not how to rebuild the step. That restraint isn't a limitation here; it's the whole point. A reader is near-always right that *something* threw them and near-always wrong about *how* to fix it — so the reaction is the signal, and the fix stays yours.
## Intake — you don't need to know what to ask
You don't have to arrive with a reading guide or specific questions. Open however you like — paste a chapter and ask "how does this land?", drop a range and say "tell me where it drags," or just "read this like a reader would." Framing what to watch for is the panel's job, not yours.
Its first reply orients you in two quick moves: a one-line map of what's about to happen (a panel of distinct readers → each reacts in reading order → a synthesis of where they agree), then a light intake:
- **Scope** — a chapter, a range, or the whole thing. It reads in reading order, the way real readers meet a book.
- **Genre and intended audience** — so the panel is made of readers your book is actually *for*. A cozy-mystery panel and a literary-fiction panel notice different things.View the complete source on GitHubworkshop-critique

Sit the piece at a workshop table — a Milford/Clarion-style round where several critiquers speak in turn while the author stays in the cone of silence and just listens.
## The one rule
This skill critiques. It **never writes or rewrites the author's prose.** The table names what the piece attempts and where it succeeds or fails, and points a direction — but no critiquer supplies a fixed line, a rewritten paragraph, or *even a throwaway "here's what I'd try."*
That last clause is a deliberate tightening. A real workshop table often sketches an example fix; this one holds the harder line, the same one the [line-editor](../../editorial/line-editor) holds — it tells you the sentence isn't working and *why*, and stops there, because the fix is exactly where your voice lives and a supplied line quietly overwrites it. Diagnosis and direction, never composition. In a real workshop the writer takes notes and revises later; this keeps that discipline absolute.
## Intake — you don't need to defend anything yet
Bring a self-contained piece — a short story, a chapter, a scene that stands on its own. Open however you like: paste it and say "workshop this," or add a line of framing if you want ("it's the opening of a horror novella"). You don't have to argue for it or pre-empt its flaws.
Its first reply orients you in two quick moves: a one-line map of what's about to happen (a table of critiquers reads the piece, each speaks in turn, you stay silent, then a synthesis), then a light intake — the piece, its genre if it isn't obvious, and whether you want the table tuned to anything specific. Then the **cone of silence** comes down: from here the table talks about the work, not to you, and you just listen.

When your agent uses it
A continuity checker that reads a manuscript against its own established facts, world rules, and timeline and flags contradictions — eyes that change colour, a dead character who reappears, a Tuesday that can't exist, a secret someone acts on before they learn it. It checks against canon the author declares or, absent that, canon it infers from the text; it separates confirmed contradictions from suspicions that may be deliberate devices, and marks its confidence on each. Use it on a drafted manuscript, especially a long or multi-thread one, before readers catch the errors. It flags the collision and cites both passages; it never rewrites the prose and never decides which version is canon.

Read the book against its own canon and timeline and flag the contradictions — before a reader finds them.
## The one rule
This skill reads, cross-checks, and flags. It **never writes or rewrites the author's prose**, and it **never decides which version is canon.** It surfaces the contradiction and both offending passages; it does not pick the "correct" fact or patch the text. Which version holds is the author's call — the skill only makes the collision impossible to miss.
## Craft criteria
It reasons from continuity-editing practice, grounded in the book's own facts (declared canon when the author provides it, inferred canon otherwise). It tracks:
- **Character facts** — names, appearance, age, relationships, established backstory.
- **Timeline** — event order, elapsed time, days of the week, seasons, character ages across the span.
- **World rules** — the story's own established constraints (magic costs, technology limits, geography) and violations of them.
- **Object & state continuity** — a wound that heals too fast, an item held then never picked up, a locked door later open.View the complete source on GitHubcopy-editor

A copy-editing pass for the mechanical layer — grammar, punctuation, spelling, consistency, house style — that flags each issue with the governing rule so the author decides. For clear mechanical errors it states the standard correction (a spelling, a comma by rule) at the help-level the author picks; where a fix would mean recasting a sentence it names the rule and stops; and where an "error" might be a deliberate voice choice — dialect, a rhythm comma splice, a fragment — it queries rather than corrects. Use it late, once the prose is settled, before submission or publication. It flags and cites the rule and states mechanical corrections; it never rewrites the author's prose or silently changes the text.

Sweep the mechanical layer — grammar, punctuation, consistency, house style — and flag each issue with the rule behind it, so the writer decides.
## The one rule
This skill reads, checks, and flags. It **never rewrites the author's prose and never silently changes the text.** The rule protects *voice*, not mechanics — and that line is what makes copy-editing possible without breaking it:
- **Mechanics it will state.** Telling you "recieve" is misspelled, or where a comma goes by a rule, is citing a convention, not capturing your voice. Token-level, rule-governed corrections — spelling, punctuation by rule, hyphenation, its/it's, one consistent variant — the skill states outright.
- **Prose it will not.** The moment a fix means recasting a sentence — a dangling modifier untangled, a run-on rephrased — that is prose. The skill names the issue and the governing rule and stops there; the sentence is yours to recast.
- **Voice it will only query.** Where an "error" might be a deliberate choice — dialect, a comma splice for rhythm, a sentence fragment, an invented spelling — it queries ("deliberate? then keep it"), never asserts a fault. The copy editor proposes; the author disposes.
Honest note on where this sits: real fiction copyeditors *do* make silent fixes for non-contestable mechanics, and may recast a tangled sentence outright. This skill does neither — it states the mechanical correction but changes nothing, and it never recasts, because a sentence knotted enough to need recasting needs a *phrasing* decision, and that decision is the author's, not the editor's (SFWA's own line). The absolute is a deliberate sharpening of trade practice, chosen for voice and author authority.

A fiction developmental editor offering the trade's two services: a manuscript assessment (the overall critique) or a full developmental edit (edit letter plus scene-anchored flags). It establishes what the book is trying to be, declares the critical lens it will apply — and which rules it re-scopes or sets aside for this book — then diagnoses structure, pacing, arc, stakes, and causality with located evidence. Use it when a draft is complete or substantially drafted, before any line or copy editing. It diagnoses; it never writes or rewrites the author's prose.

Diagnose the shape of the story and deliver the service a developmental editor
actually sells — an assessment or a full edit letter — after declaring the lens
the diagnosis will use.
## The one rule
This skill reads, analyses, and critiques. It **never writes or rewrites the
author's prose.** It will point at the chapter that collapses the midpoint and
explain why; it will not hand back a rewritten chapter. The diagnosis is the
deliverable — the writing stays the author's.

When your agent uses it
A line editor that reads prose sentence by sentence and shows which lines are weak — filtering, overwriting, flat rhythm, blurred clarity, voice slips — naming the craft principle behind each and pointing at the fix, without ever writing the replacement. It works pattern-first: it surfaces the writer's recurring line-level habits and flags the clearest instances, so they fix the class in their own voice. Use it after the story works, when the prose needs to earn its place line by line. It marks and explains; it never rewrites the author's sentences.

Read the prose sentence by sentence and show the writer which lines are weak and why — so they fix them in their own voice, not the skill's.
## The one rule
This skill reads, analyses, and critiques at the level of the line. It **never writes or rewrites the author's prose.** It will underline the filtered sentence, name the problem, and point at the fix — but it will not hand back a smoother version. If it rewrote the line, the voice would become the skill's, and voice is the whole point of a line edit. The pen stays in the author's hand.
Honest note on where this sits: a human line editor may, now and then, rewrite an uncontestable line outright. This skill deliberately does not — not because the trade forbids it (it doesn't), but because a machine-supplied line captures a writer's voice even more readily than a human editor's would. The *rationale* is the trade's — a good line edit should sound like the author at their best, not the editor. The *absolute* is ours, and it is the sharper, safer choice for an augmentation tool.
## How it flags — the whole discipline
At the sentence level the natural fix *is* a better sentence — so the constraint is the craft. Every flag has four parts and stops before the fifth:
1. **The line**, quoted.
2. **The issue**, named.View the complete source on GitHubSkills included
